YOU ARE STUDYING LORD OF THE FLIES.

Monday 22nd May: English Literature 1 – Macbeth and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

(Shakespeare and the 19th century novel)

1 hour 45 minutes.

The two questions are equally weighted so spend about 50 minutes on each question. Aim to leave some time to read it through and make any additions or amendments.

This is a closed book exam which means that you will not have a copy of the play or novel – you need to know them and learn quotations.

Section A – Macbeth (30 marks)

You will be given an extract from the play together with a question which will ask you to comment on the extract and make links with the play as a whole e.g.

Starting with this extract, explain how Shakespeare presents the character of Macbeth. Write about:

  • how Shakespeare presents Macbeth in this extract
  • how Shakespeare presents Macbeth in the play as a whole.

There is only ONE question and you must answer it.

Section B – The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (30 marks)

You will be given an extract from the play together with a question which will ask you to comment on the extract and make links with the play as a whole e.g.

Starting with this extract, write about how Stevenson presents Mr Hyde as disturbing.

Write about:

  • How Stevenson presents Mr Hyde in this extract
  • How Stevenson presents him as a disturbed character in the novel as a whole

There is only ONE question and you must answer it.

Both these questions are assessing you on:

AO1 – understanding, personal response, textual references

AO2 – analysis of language, form and structure; including technical terminology

AO3 – analysis of the relationship between the text and when it was written (context)

The Macbeth question also assesses you on:

Section B – poetry cluster Power and Conflict (30 marks)

You will be given a list of the poems that you have studied but NOT a copy of the poems themselves, so you need to know all of these poems well and remember quotations so that you can comment on the poets’ techniques.  You will be given a theme or focus. There will be ONE question which you must answer e.g.

Compare how poets explore the impact of memories in Remains and one other poem of your choice.

Both these questions are assessing you on:
